Reynisfjara Beach – Vik, Iceland

On Iceland’s south coast, about two and a half hours south east of Reykjavik by car, you will find the world famous black sand beaches of Reynisfjara near the town of Vik.  Nearby sights are the famous black beaches, columnar basalt formations and the frozen troll towers jutting from the sea providing a dramatic backdrop to the waves crashing jagged, volcanic rocks against the beaches until they smooth and shine black. Nearby hikes include the plane wreck as well as the thermal swimming pool for a quick refreshing break.  Skogafoss Waterfall is also a great sight on the route as you continue your way east toward Hofn.

If this area looks familiar to some watchers of the wall, it’s because you have seen these areas on some episodes of Game of Thrones from Ollies Village to the highlands fight of the Mountain and Lady.
