Starting in May each year the loggerhead turtles begin crawling up the shores of Cancun to lay their eggs in the dunes. 40 to 60 days later tiny baby turtles being breaking out of their soft skins and crawling out of the sand toward the rough ocean waters for the first time.  They have to avoid being picked off by birds, fish, and crabs as they navigate through the beach to the shallow waters and out to sea.  Cancun has recently began important conservation efforts to facilitate the process.  If you go to Cancun in the summer watch out for turtle nests on the beaches and call a lifeguard or conservation representative at the resort for assistance.
